You, Aid Training and the Changes to First Aid Regulations October 1st 2009

Background

As you will be aware on 1st October 2009 there are some important changes coming into force as regards first aid training. One area that is changing is HSE/Ofqual Approval. From 1st October companies who wish to train HSE approved First Aid at Work courses must still be HSE approved. Those that wish to run the new one-day Emergency First Aid at Work course must either be HSE approved or approved by an Ofqual recognised awarding body.

This essentially means that without approval individuals and companies will find it more difficult to certify their own course. The other alternative is to certify your courses through a third party who does hold the necessary approval.

Our aim is to continue to support those who have completed our instructors courses, in order to do this we are instigating the following packages.

1. HSE First Aid at Work (FAW) -Three Days and First Aid at Work Requalification - Two Days

a. The cost of registration, and a certificate + manual is £15 + vat per delegate
b. If only the registration and certificate is required the cost would be £10 + vat per delegate

2. Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) - Health and Safety Executive (HSE) /QCA Approved-One Day Course

a. The cost of registration, and a certificate + manual is £5 + vat per delegate
b. If only the registration and certificate is required the cost would be £3.50p + vat per delegate

Quality Assurance

As part of the HSE and our quality assurance we must evidence that each trainer and assessor is monitored at least once a year delivering training. In order to do this we will be instigating one-day sessions at our central training venues in Warminster, London, Wolverhampton and Newcastle-upon-Tyne where you can come along and deliver a session, which we provide feedback and a written report for.

The cost of this will be £50 + vat per person. Alternatively, if you have enough staff to warrant it we can come to you and assess them at your premises for a fixed fee of £200 + vat.
If you certificate more than 100 learners a year through us there will be no charge for attending the one-day sessions to have your training evaluated.

Training Packs

We must ensure that the standard of the course content is fully maintained. In order to do that centres/individuals can produce their own session plans etc and we will check them over. Alternatively our complete pack and DVD can be purchased for £100 + vat. This has everything that is required to train the FAW and EFAW courses. (This pack is currently being updated and will be available soon)

Action Plan

In order to register with us you will need to provide copies of the following documents for all your trainers and assessors:

1. An in-date FAW certificate unless a Registered General Nurse, Doctor or State Registered Paramedic (in these cases we will also need to keep on file their professional qualifications)
2. Evidence of a background in First Aid at Work i.e. a CV
3. A suitable training and/or assessing qualification
4. A training diary, evidencing what you have previously trained. This is not essential but is a great help. Once registered with us we will keep accurate records of this going forward.

In addition you will need to hold a suitable insurance policy-we can provide details of some on request.

For Those Already Using This Service

Some of you may already be using our service from us – if this is the case then over the next few months we will be in contact to ensure that we have all the documentation required.
