due to be published in late
2005. In essence we should
see changes to the length of
course and also the time between
refreshers...
Cross Infection
There are potential risks from cross infection
when treating any casualty. In
particular viruses such as Hepatitis B and
C, and HIV (AIDS) all of which can be
transmitted through infected blood. This is
very much a two way process and it is just
as important to protect the casualty as it is
to protect the first aider...
Strokes
Strokes occur when the blood supply,
and therefore the oxygen supply to
the brain is interrupted. The brain
does not tolerate a lack of oxygen and
the cells will start to die very quickly
once the supply is cut. They are more
normally caused by a blood clot
blocking the artery, however the artery
rupturing may also cause it. The
elderly more commonly suffer them
although they can affect the younger
generation...
