When employing seasonal and young workers it is vital that businesses consider the additional risks associated. Below are reasons why these types of workers are at greater risk than seasoned employees, as well some tips to make sure you’re prepared for taking them under your wing.
Why so risky?
Unfamiliarity - Those who are new, temporary or going into their first job will not know the specific work environment and it will take them time to get used to it. They’re less likely to identify risks having not seen them before.
Age - We don’t mean to stereotype, but the younger generation are more liable to take a shortcut that could be a potential risk than those who know they job like the back of their hand.
Immaturity - Someone who hasn’t reached full maturity they feel shy and embarrassed to ask questions about the job or ask for help with a task they’re unsure of. This lack of confidence can lead to them missing out on learning important information.
Failing to see the problem - Some businesses tend to skip over the basic health and safety training when hiring a temporary worker. This can be extremely dangerous as they will not know any risks that come with the job and are far more likely to be injured whilst working.
Write off the risk
Training - Full on-the-job training should be given to all employees including young and temporary workers.
Systems - Businesses should have systems in place so when a problem needs to be reported a plan can be followed so it can be solved properly.
Extra Supervision - When taking on a young or temporary worker, bear in mind that it may be their first role in your field of work. As such, they probably won’t know much about the job and may struggle with certain tasks. Make sure they have some extra supervision ensuring they can do their tasks safely are correctly.
Mix it up - If a task is too complicated or cannot be done in a safe way for the new employee, try simplifying it and changing it to a way that makes it safer and easier to do.
Inform the regulars - Let your existing employees know the potential risks that come with taking on young and temporary workers, what to look for, how to assist them and what to do in case of a problem or accident.
