While waiting for the emergency services to arrive there are things that you can do to care for a victim. For this reason, we are going to provide a guide on how to treat severe burn cases quickly and safely. The following first aid procedures should be used to help a burn victim as soon as possible. This will limit the degree of damage to the skin and should be carried out while waiting for help to arrive.
Initially make sure that the victim is not in contact with smouldering material or exposed to heat or smoke. This may mean moving the victim from the area.
Do not remove anything that is stuck to the burnt skin however - although you can remove clothing or jewellery from near the affected area.
Make sure not to immerse the burn in cold water or use ice, as this can cause a drop in body temperature, blood pressure and circulation.
Keep the victim warm to prevent hypothermia by using a blanket or clothing, but you should avoid placing this on the injured area.
If possible, cover the burn with a cool, moist and sterile bandage, cloth or towel to prevent infection. Alternatively, use a single layer of cling film, or a clean, clear plastic bag for burns on the hands.
Where possible you should raise the burned body part(s) above heart level.
These are quick steps for treating severe burns, but the first step must always be to request medical assistance. It is also important that organisations have people who understand how to care for burn accidents.
